Biden’s Free Pass? October 2, 2008

In today’s Chicago Sun-TImes, there was a small article discussing how Joe Biden, Obama’s VP running mate, has lied once again. According to the article, while campaigning in Virginia recently Biden claimed once again to be a coal miner. Beyond that, he stated that he was born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, which is another untruth. For the record, according to the Sun-Times, Biden has never been a coal miner. His grandfather was a mining engineer. Also, he while he was born in Scranton, PA, he was raised in Delaware and daddy ran a car dealership, not a mine.

This isn’t the first time Biden has been caught in a lie. In addition to claiming to be a coal miner, he has also claimed to be a first generation college graduate (he’s not), and he claimed to have graduated at the top of his class in law school (he was in the bottom). Futhermore, Biden has repeatedly plagiarized speeches (he abandoned his bid for President in 1988 for that one), and he was caught plagiarizing in law school.

So what is it that makes Americans so much more supportive of Joe Biden for Vice President rather than Sarah Palin? He lies. He lies again, and then he is so unoriginal he plagiarizes, and plagiarizes again. Do we really want our lives to possibly depend on the guy who can’t tell the truth if his life depended on it? How is it that Biden gets a pass on his unscrupulous behavior and Palin gets attacked for being real? Have we really become a society that dismisses lies as long as they boost the liberal agenda? How has truth and genuineness become so easily dismissed?

If the liberal argument is that Palin is a heartbeat away from being President, has anyone considered how many heartbeats away Biden is? I understand the argument that McCain is older, but Obama is also a risk with his celebrity persona. There are plenty of crazies out there who are a possible danger to him as well (Hello, Kennedy family? Anyone care to attest to that?)

The offices of President and Vice President are the two most important offices in our country. While people are too busy ticking off the days McCain has left to live because he’s, gasp!, in his seventies, and too busy criticizing Sarah Palin because she is an honest, fresh face to the Washington scene, they are forgetting the qualities of their VP canidate: liar, liar, plagiarizer.

Think it through.

“To be or not to be, that is the question.” –Wm. Shakespeare December 31, 2007

My goal for the new year is to be.  Just be.  Be in the moment.  Be in today.  Before it’s gone.   As a mother of young children–two challenging, yet utterly delightful, deliciously adorable boys, I try to remind myself to stop and just be.  Be in the moment, be in the excitement in my children’s eyes, just be.  In the wild world of sleepless nights and endless diaper changes, playdates and preschool, tantrums and picky eating, it is easy to lose my purpose;  ”be”-ing a mother to my boys.    Today, I will slow down and listen to my children, really listen.  What are they saying?  What are they not saying?  For today, I will forget the dishes, forget the laundry, forget the playdates and overdue library books.  I will be in my children’s world for, it is in their delight, their awe, their wonder, their innocence that I find purpose.    William Shakespeare once wrote, “To be or not to be, that is the question.”  My vote?  To be.  Undoubtedly,  to be.   –Live Mama
